Facts about Oconomowoc Lake, WI
Considered one of the wealthiest jurisdictions in the state, Oconomowoc Lake is home to more than 600 residents. Classed as a village outside the City of Oconomowoc, the area has long been a haven for the wealthy who are looking for the ideal place to spend their summers.
The first development of the area took place in 1858. At that time, the Gifford family purchased the lakeside property and built a summer home. Train service was soon implemented, making travel to the lake faster and simpler. Within the next two decades, additional properties were purchased, and residences were established.
In 1878, the Gifford family converted their private home into the Gifford Hotel. The resort hotel continued to operate until 1910. As more people established summer homes, the idea of incorporating them into some sort of jurisdiction gained in popularity. From 1934, people began to refer to the area as the 'Unofficial Village of Oconomowoc Lake." The unofficial status came to an end in 1952, when a majority of the citizens voted to incorporate as a village.
